For the last couple of months I have been working with Dave’s step dad in his renovating business. We go in and do whatever the banks need us to do to fix the house up after it’s been foreclosed. We’ve seen a lot of disgusting homes where the inhabitants seemed to never clean. We’ve dealt with roaches, mice droppings, unimaginable children’s bathrooms, and yards like jungles. Dave, his step dad Brad, and other men that work do that carpet replacing, tile cutting and laying, painting, installments of counters and other such labors. I mostly go in when they’re finished and clean up.
Recently a huge opportunity has come up for both me and Dave. Brad got signed onto a huge real estate company based out of Texas. They own about one million houses nationwide. They have a thousand or so in our area. Brad is hiring a couple teams to perform regular maintenance of these homes for resale. They have already been renovated, so the teams will only be keeping up the yard, and doing simple cleaning on the inside. Brad would assign Dave to be his own team, but Dave doesn’t have his license. He’d have to buy a car and get an assessment from the court, and pay monthly fees for an interlock. He hasn’t really had much money to spare aside from bills and rent. Brad wants me and Dave to be one team, and through this work we will get a contractor’s license, bonded and insured through the company. We will both be making $800 a week each. We’ll be doing 5 houses a day, Monday through Friday.
Dave and I were planning to get a $3,000 small truck to haul our yard equipment in, and with that truck Dave could get his license. Then he can take over the vehicle and get himself places without relying on the bus route, his roommate, or me. It’s an awesome opportunity for income.
Last week I had an interview with a veterinary clinic for a receptionist position. The job is part time, but they are willing to cross train me in veterinary assistance! And they don’t do convenience euthanasia, which was a big part of why I was considering a new career. This job will not make much money. But it will advance into something I love to do. With the income at this new job I will not be able to pay all my bills. Christmas is coming up and presents will be hard to afford. I really don’t know what to do.
I was coming up with ideas and this is one of them. If the clinic offers me the job: “Taking care of animals is where my heart is. It’s what I want for my career. But I need a stable income right now and I’ve found an opportunity to save up a lot of money. I’d like to work at that job for six months or so. When I’ve reached some of my financial goals, will you still be willing to train me in vet assistance?” I’m at a crossroad. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
